MONUMENT AVENUE RESIDENCE
Richmond, VA
KT&A is working with the owner of a townhouse residence near the Lee statue on Monument Avenue. The owner is completely renovating the house and decided that the gardens needed to be reworked to provide a fitting setting for the house and to make the existing small spaces more usable. The new design will remove a jumble of mixed plantings to create a more elegant and harmonious planting scheme. Landscape installation will take place in Spring 2012.
BLANDFIELD PLANTATION
Essex County, VA
Built on the Rappahanock River by the Beverly family in the 1760′s, Virginia Historic Landmark Blandfield Plantation is currently used both as a private residence as well as a venue for private events and a location for waterfowl and upland hunting. KT&A is working with the current Owner of the 3,500 acre property to replace some plantings that have reached senescence and to create a master plan for the future development of the landscape. Immediate landscape plans include improvement of the gardens around the Mansion, as well as landscape and event spaces at the Hunting Lodge.
THE ANN ADAMS CARRINGTON HOUSE
Richmond, VA
Located in Richmond’s historic Church Hill district, the Carrington House dates from 1810 and is the only surviving Federal Period bowfront residence remaining in Richmond. The site contains rich layers of history, including foundations of former outbuildings as well as middens where former residences disposed of refuse. The current residents completed a full renovation of the structure, and the house was included in The Garden Club of Virginia’s 2010 tour. KT&A is worked with the Owner to map out a site plan for development of the back gardens, which she will implement over time.
RESIDENCE IN THE CALIFORNIA WINE COUNTRY
Sonoma, CA
KT&A is working with Robert A.M. Stern Architects to complete construction of a project designed while at that office. The site has spectacular views over Sonoma valley; the project includes a main house, two outbuildings, a service court, a realigned driveway, a motor court, a pool terrace, and a sunset terrace. The clients requested that the planting screen residences across the valley while maintaining the openness of their view to the south and west. The project is currently under construction.
WINDSOR FARMS RESIDENCE
Richmond, VA
After doing an addition to their home several years ago, the clients are now making modifications to their back yard. The site has existing plantings, terraces, and walls that have fallen into disrepair and are in need of renovation. The design will incorporate a small pavilion for outdoor dining, a new bluestone terrace, gardens, and a lower pool terrace set several feet below the upper yard. There will be an expanded paved area for additional car parking and provision for a cutting garden or vegetable garden in a corner of the property. Phase One installation will be completed in December 2011.
THE LOFTS AT WEST STATION
Roanoke, VA
KT&A is collaborating with BAM Architects on the design of the entry terrace to this new loft apartment building, which is being converted from two abandoned warehouses in the downtown industrial district of Roanoke. Arced walls of Cor-Ten steel intersect the retaining wall to the former loading dock. The steel walls create planters in which a planting of Horsetails (Equisetum hymaele) screens an outdoor terrace from the street. The project is currently under construction, with move-ins to start in early 2012.
RANDOLPH-MACON COLLEGE LIBRARY ADDITION
Ashland, VA
KT&A is working with Glavé and Holmes Architects to design a small courtyard associated with a new addition to the RMC Library. Because the new pavilion is to be open around the clock safety issues are paramount, so the design is open and maintains full visibility from the road. Construction will begin in January 2012.
CHARLES GILLETTE GARDEN REJUVENATION
Richmond, VA
KT&A is involved in ongoing work with the Owners to rejuvenate the planting within the Gillette-designed structure of the garden. The garden has been modified over time, most recently with the implementation of a new landscape design in 2000. KT&A evaluated which plantings that have been successful vs. those which have declined or do not contribute to the beauty of the garden. The design revisions focus on shifting the emphasis away from labor-intensive annual plantings to more easily maintained shrubs, groundcovers, and perennials.
RICHMOND SYMPHONY DESIGNER SHOW HOUSE
Richmond, VA
KT&A worked as a consultant to Kelly Brown Interiors to create a pair of “living” walls to flank the entry door of the garden room in the Fall 2010 Symphony Show House, which was open September – October 2010.
MIDLOTHIAN RESIDENCE
Matoaca, VA
KT&A is assiting the clients in the creation of a backyard oasis including pool, spa, outdoor fireplace, and vine-covered pergola. Installation will be complete in January 2012.
HEMLOCK HOUSE
Free Union, VA
Kendra Taylor & Associates developed a master plan for this 10-acre property in the countryside near Charlottesville. The property includes a mid-19th-century farmhouse, which the current owners have renovated and added onto, as well as a barn and garage. The house’s front yard is dominated by ancient hemlocks with an understory of large, mature boxwoods and the remainder of the property is in fields or woodland. Phase I will incorporate a new driveway and motor court, guest parking, vegetable/cutting garden, and a series of garden spaces around the house; potential future elements include a utility building, pool pavilion and pool, and walking trails in the wooded areas. Views to the majestic Blue Ridge mountains will be opened up and framed.
